to change the default language for abiword:
cd /usr/share/abiword-2.8/templates
sudo mv normal.awt normal.awt.org # creates backup
sudo cp normal.awt-en_GB normal.awt
Done! Default Language for abiword is now British English.

I’m glad to searched a trick like that. In Brazilian Portuguese documents which language I write, then the default was American English. It was a troubleshooting until I saw your post. I have done that, and worked out. Thank you very much!
Note the current version that ships with Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) is 2.8.
